Say hello to summer SMOOTHIES

Hello friends!

I don’t know about you…but down under in NZ, summer is finally starting. Like it’s actually hot enough that I don’t need my electric blanket on. Now I may sound like a terrible wuss, but I’ll have you know, I have been swimming (in the freezing ocean) 3 times already this summer. And since things are heating up around here, this week seemed like the perfect occasion to bring out a delicious array of smoothies.

I have 3 equally exceptional recipes for you to try…green goddess, perky plum and tropical tango.

Unfortunately (for you) I am going to be away at the beach for a little bit so there won’t be any posts to brighten your week, however I will try to add a few pics to Instagram so I can boast of what a great time I’m having.

Our superstar of the week is mango, as it really is the best fruit and… bonus…they are in season right now. Well…Mangoes are the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines. The fruit and leaves are often used as decorations at weddings and parties. They also contain a relatively high amount of vitamin C and folate (see not just a pretty face.) So all-in-all it’s a winner. Unfortunately, it’s too chilly in NZ to grow mangoes, unlike my lucky Ozzie cousin who’s got them flourishing in his backyard (the unfairness of life eh?)

Speaking of the unfairness of life…I decided to do “No chocolate January,” you know, to start off the year with the best intentions. Well, what I had not bargained on was having a friend’s birthday party…and coming face to face with the mother of all chocolate cakes. As I was only 8 days into the new year I summoned the willpower to resist the captivating, Cleopatra of a cake.

And while writing this post, worrying that nothing interesting had happened to me this week…something did in fact happen. When we were younger my brother and I used to fight ALL the time. He would always try to break into my room when I tried to escape from him and in doing so we managed to break my door handle. Today my Dad took off the door handles to fix them, and I was nonchalantly writing in my room when…BOOM… a tiny gust of wind blew my door shut. So I ended up locked into my own room (I mean can it get more tragic than that?) Thankfully my brother managed to break into my room and free me…now how’s that for ironic?

So in the spirit of summer let’s make some smoothies!

For a slightly tart treat try, Perky Plum:

  • ½ cup black doris plums (roughly 3-4 plums) + 2 Tbsp juice
  • ½ cup yoghurt
  • ½ cup milk

If you wish to feel extremely gratified try, Green goddess:

  • ½ cup yoghurt
  • ½ cup milk
  • A (greedy) handful spinach
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 Tbsp nut butter

Lastly, if you are still pining for the holidays try, Tropical tango:

  • ½ cup yoghurt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • ½ cup pineapple
  • ½ cup mango(tinned, fresh or frozen…it’s just as delicious) + 2 Tbsp juice.

Basically all you need to do is bang all the ingredients into a blender, whizz it up, add sweetner if you like, then ENJOY!

Couldn’t get any simpler than that (unless someone made it for you of course.)

I hope you all have a particularly fantastic week. Until you hear from me again, be careful with locks, let your hair down and make a sensational smoothie. 2015-01-08 15.06.30

Could you resist that?
